When you receive a red number you die afterward. The story originated in Machakos town here in Kenya. It is said that several people had died after receiving a call from a red number. What do you think? Give us your verdict.
ULK’s verdict: The story is fake as it had appeared in Afghanistan and Nigeria some years back. Kenya is apparently seven years late to receive the hoax. The story apparently caused so much fear to poor Kenyan’s some even turned off their phones to avoid receiving the red number.
The next evening the minister for Information Communications Hon. Samuel Poghisio issued a press conference disapproving the false claims as untrue. He issued a stern warning to those propagating the messages as law breakers who would face serious consequences of the law. Kenya has just enacted the Hate speech law and he warned that investigations were ongoing and those who were spreading the lie by calling others would face prosecution by the law. It seems this worked as people stopped calling others to inform them of the red number story.
It seems that this hoax caused the mobile operators a lot of money in revenues too as many people either turned off their phones or just did not pick calls from unknown numbers. Safaricom’s CEO Mr Michael Joseph issued a press conference the same day rubbishing claims that someone could receiveĀ a red number and be harmed as a result. He said there is no way a mobile phone can receive a number in red if it is not programed to do so. We at ULK totally agree.
